Mads Würtz Schmidt Waits for Victory
Jérémy-Günther-Heinz Jähnick |
Mads Würtz Schmidt of Denmark posted the best time early in the competition and had to wait three hours near the podium to realize that he had won the competition. He and Maximilian Schachmann (Germany) benefited from riding the 30 km (18.6 mile) course early as the weather gradually grew worse as the day wore on. The final cyclists had to ride through wind and rain at the end. American U23 time trial champion Daniel Eaton was third out on the course but faded to tenth riding into a headwind at the race finish. With this championship, Schmidt, who is not currently on a team, should be able to find a slot on a team for the coming season.

American Chloe Dygert Claims First World Championship
Dygert’s victory in the 15 km (9.32 mile) Women’s Under 23 Individual Time Trial was the first Gold Medal for the United States. American teammate Emma White finished second in the competition with Australian Anna-Leeza Hull winning the Bronze medal.
The 18-year-old Dygert from Indiana spent last year recovering from a torn ACL that she received outside of cycling. White was fifth last year in the junior category. In her last year in the junior category, she claimed the silver medal. Hull started slowly in the first half of the course, but Hull improved in the second half of the race, as that portion of the course suited her skills better.
