Sagan Sails to Victory in Elite Men’s Road Race

Peter Sagan won the Elite Men’s Road Race at the UCI World Championship in Richmond, VA on Sunday. The 25 year old Slovak pulled away from the peloton with 1.6 km (1 mile) to go in the 259.2 km (161 mile) course of 16 laps of a 16 km (10 mile) circuit and crossed the finish line well ahead of the peloton to win the Rainbow Jersey. Michael Matthews (Australia) placed second among the peloton charging to catch up to Sagan. Ramunas Navardauskas (Lithuania) came in third. This gold medal is the first medal for Slovakia in the Men’s Championships.
An eight-rider breakaway formed early in the race consisting of Ben King (USA), Conor Dunne (Ireland), Carlos Alzate (Colombia), Sung Park Baek (South Korea), Jesse Sergent (New Zealand), Ivan Stevic (Serbia), Serghei Tvetcov (Romania) and Andriy Khripta (Ukraine). King is a native of Richmond. King and the breakaway built up a gap of 4 minutes over a peloton led by the Dutch.

The breakaway group was swept up after 4 hours in the front. With two laps to go in the race a four-man breakaway formed with Tom Boonen (Belgium), Elia Viviani (Italy),  Bauke Mollema (Netherlands) and (Poland) Michal Kwiatkowski. this talented group was pulled back by the peloton after one lap.
Sagan then attacked past a surging peloton to pull ahead. Sagan went into an aerodynamic tuck to gain a little more time on the following descent. While still pushing forward and cutting the corners very tightly, Sagan built up enough of a lead to push home to the finish almost casually.
