Marcel Kittel takes Stage 1 of the Tour of California

Marcel Kittel won Stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California behind a well-executed lead-out by his Quick-Step Floors team. Team Sky led the finishing circuits in Sacramento until the final lap. Team Rally Cycling and Quick-Step battled each other on the final three-mile circuit with Peter Sagan of Bora-Hansgrohe lurking near the front of the pack. However, Quick-Step established control of the front of the sprinting peloton, with Marcel Kittle racing across the line. Peter Sagan took second, following Kittel’s wheel, and Elia Viviani of Team Sky and John Degenkolb of Trek-Segafredo close behind in third and fourth.
This 167 km (104 mile) stage was the opening of the 12th Annual Amgen Tour of California. The Tour of California is now a WorldTour event with a balanced route running from Northern California to Southern California. This year’s Queen Stage will be Stage 5, with a mountain top finish at Mount Baldy. That stage will feature 3658 m (12,000 feet) of climbing. In contrast, today’s stage was one for the sprinters, despite the crosswinds.
UnitedHealthcare's Jonny Clarke, BMC Racing's Floris Gerts, Jelly Belly-Maxxis' Ben Wolfe and Novo Nordisk's Charles Planet led the early breakaway on the stage. However, the peloton did not let the group get beyond 2 minutes in front. With the Tour sprinter’s eyeing the leader jersey, the teams did not want to contend with the breakaway and position themselves for the win in the final circuits around the center of the California state capitol. The peloton closed the gap as the final circuits began setting up the final criterium-like battles in the streets of Sacramento.
