Sagan beats Froome

Sagan beats Froome on Stage 11

On a very windy Stage 11, Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) beat Chris Froome (Team Sky) for the Stage 11 victory. This victory along with coming in second in the intermediate sprint, increased his margin over second place Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) to 90 points for the Green Jersey. Chris Froome increased his lead in the General Classification fight, by creating a gap of 7 seconds over the peloton and claiming the 6 second time bonus for finishing second. Froome is now 28 seconds ahead of second place Adam Yates (Orica-BikeExchange). Tomorrow’s tough Stage 12 to Mont Ventoux has been shortened by 6 km due to winds that are expected to reach 120km/h. The stage will finish 6 km down the mountain at Chalet Reynard instead of at the iconic top.

Stage 11 was the second transitional stage in a row with a rolling route profile over 162.5 km (101 miles) between Carcassonne and Montpellier in southern France. The stage started with 192 riders out of the original 198. There were two Category 4 climbs today. This was a windy sprinters stage, one day before the Tour visits Mont Ventoux on Thursday.
A two man breakaway formed early in the stage. Arthur Vichot (FDJ) and Leigh Howard (IAM Cycling) built a three minute lead in the strong winds. Team Sky paced the peloton keeping the Yellow Jersey of teammate Chris Froome out of trouble on the road.
With 15 km to go in the stage, the Tinkoff and BMC riders paced the peloton with Team Sky close behind. A group of four riders, Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas of Team Sky, along with Peter Sagan and Maciej Bodnar (Tinkoff) formed a breakaway with a small gap of 18 seconds on the wind buffeted peloton with 12 km to go. The other sprinter teams tried to reel them in as they approached the finish, but the gap stayed. Cavendish suffered a mechanical near the end, so he could not fight for this stage. This may be the last stage for him before he leaves to prepare for the Olympics. Sagan stayed ahead of Froome in the final kilometer to take the victory.
