Schleck Wins Stage 16, Rodriguez Takes Red Jersey

Going into tomorrow's rest day, four cyclists; Joaquim Rodriguez (Team Katusha), Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team), Rafal Majka (Tinkoff-Saxo) and Tom Dumoulin (Team Giant-Alpecin), are all close to the overall Vuelta win. Frank Schleck of Trek Factory Racing won a tough Stage 16, with 6 categorized climbs. This victory was Schleck’s first victory in the Vuelta in his career. Joachim Rodriguez took the lead in the General Classification standings over Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team) by one second. The current standings set up a crucial contest in Wednesday's individual time trial where the ultimate winner could emerge.
A ten rider breakaway developed with 62 km (38 miles ) to go in the mountainous 184 km (114 mile) stage from Luarca to Ermita del Alba on the second of seven categorised climbs, including a Categoria Especial climb to the finish, Alto Ermita del Alba, with an 11% grade average. This stage had the ninth summit finish of the race. The peloton let the breakaway group advantage grow to 21 minutes at one point before reducing the gap. Schleck was in the breakaway group from the start of the breakaway. As the race proceeded over the climbs, the breakaway group began to lose riders. With 21 km (13 miles ) to go in the stage, there were two other riders with Schleck on the next to last climb. With 1.5 km (0.93 miles) to go to the summit finish, Schleck pulled away from the last rider with him, Rodolfo Torres (Columbia).
Astana Pro Team and Tinkoff-Saxo led the peloton, supporting Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team) and Rafal Majka (Tinkoff-Saxo). Their tempo reduced the peloton to fifteen riders. However Tom Dumoulin (Team Giant-Alpecin) finished only 20 seconds behind the other leaders to finish 16th in the stage. Dumoulin stays in 4th place in the GC standings with a 1 minute, 51-second deficit.
Tomorrow is a rest day in Burgos, with a 38 km (23.6 mile) individual time trial in the same city. Burgos is the historic capital of Castile.
