Vuelta a Espana Stage 11 Results

Landa wins the Queen Stage of the Vuelta

Mikel Landa (Astana Pro Team) won the toughest stage of the Vuelta with an attack late in the stage that had 6 categorized climbs. Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team) came in second in the stage and took the lead in the General Classification standings over Tom Dumoulin (Team Giant-Alpecin), the previous leader. Chris Froome (Team Sky) crashed early in the stage and ended the stage 7 minutes behind Landa. The crash puts Froome’s hope of winning the Tour and the Vuelta in doubt. Sergio Paulinho (Tinkoff-Saxo) withdrew from the race after colliding with a race motorcycle. Paulinho suffered a leg injury requiring stitches. Paulinho is the second Tinkoff-Saxo cyclist to pull out from the Vuelta after an accident with a race motorcycle. Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo) left the Vuelta in Stage 8.
Stage 11 ran from Andorra to Els Cortals de Encamp for only 138 km (86 miles) but up and over 6 categorized climbs including 4 Category 1 climbs, 1 Category 2 climb and 1 Especial (beyond Category) climb. Froome said that this would be the toughest Grand Tour stage of his career before the start. Joaquim Rodriguez (Team Katusha) and Dumoulin are the only GC contenders within one minute of Aru.
A 19 rider breakaway formed early in the stage. Team Sky, Astana Pro Team, and Movistar led the peloton and kept the gap at 5 minutes.  The following climbs brought the breakaway group down to 5 riders with 9 km (5.6 miles) to go. Landa then pulled away from the breakaway and led the remaining 9 km (5.6 miles) to the finish.
Stage 12 looks like a sprinter’s stage with one Category 2 climb at the 54.3 km (34 mile) mark of the 172.5 km (107.2 mile)  route from Andorra to Lleida. The final 40 km (25 miles) of the stage are flat and slightly downhill toward the finish.
