Armitstead Wins Rainbow Jersey at Elite Women’s Road Race

Elizabeth Armitstead Great Britain edged Anna Van Der Breggen (Netherlands) at the finish line to win the Rainbow Jersey of the Women’s Elite Road Race at the UCI World Championships in Richmond, VA. Armitstead passed Van Der Breggen in a bunch sprint with 50 meters to go in the race. Van Der Breggen came in second and Megan Guarnier (USA) came in third. Megan’s UCI World Championship podium finish was the first for the USA women since 1994.
The 129.6 km (80.5 mile) race was run under cloudy skies. The route was 16 km (9.94 mile) circuit with eight laps. Throughout the race multiple breakaway groups formed and the peloton never let any of the breakaways build a significant gap.
A breakaway group consisting of Coryn Rivera (USA), Amy Pieters (Netherlands), Audrey Cordon (France), Lauren Kitchen and Rachel Neylan (Australia), Emilia Fahlin (Sweden), Valentina Scandolara (Italy), Malgorzata Jasinska (Poland) and Romy Kasper (Germany) opened a gap of one minute with 25 km (15.5 miles) to go. Jasinska tried to break clear of the breakaway group with 9 km to go but was caught. Then Kitchen and Scandolara pulled away from 8 km to the base of Libby Hill, 3.9 km to the end of the race. The peloton caught up with Kitchen and Scandolara. Armitstead attacked with 1 km to go in the race and a small elite group followed her closely to the finish line. Van Der Breggen opened up the sprint, with Armitstead drafting behind. Armitstead passed Van Der Breggen at the line.
