Ledanois of France Wins the Under 23 Road Race

Frenchman Kevin Ledanois edged out Simone Consonni of Italy to win the Under 23 Road Race in the UCI World Championship in Richmond, VA. A ten man breakaway developed early in the 162.2 km (100.8 mile) race; Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier (Eritrea), Stepan Astafyev (Kazakhstan), Gregory Daniel (USA), Joao Rodrigues (Portugal) and Omer Goldstein (Israel), Eddie Dunbar (Ireland), Wilmar Paredes (Colombia), Jose Luis Rodriguez (Chile), Adil Barbari (Algeria) and Jean Bosco Insengiyumva (Rwanda). Soon after the breakaway fell apart and only three riders remained 19 seconds in front of the peloton.
With three laps remaining in the road race, the breakaway sped up straining the peloton, leaving the riders in a long string. However, the peloton responded, and the gap to the breakaway decreased nevertheless.
Rain began to fall on the bell lap, and the peloton came together for the final lap of the road circuit. With 500 meters to go in the race, Ledanois was in the front holding off a sprinting field. Ledanois held on to win the Rainbow Jersey by a slim margin.
