Esteban Chaves regains Vuelta Lead

Esteban Chaves of Orica-GreenEDGE regained the Vuelta Red Jersey from Tom Dumoulin (Team Giant-Alpecin) in Stage 6 today. This is the third stage victory for Orica-GreenEDGE in six stages of the Vuelta and second stage victory for Chaves. Chaves attacked with 2.3 km to go in the stage, leaving Dumoulin with the rest of the lead peloton. Dan Martin (Cannondale-Garmin) passed Dumoulin as well in the final kilometer to take second place. Dumoulin is now 10 seconds behind and the other top GC contenders are still within one minute of the lead, with dark horse GC contender Tejay Van Garderen (BMC Racing Team) in 13th place, 1:16 behind Chaves.

The 200.3 km (124 mile) route from CĆ³rdoba to Sierra de Cazorla for Stage 6 had two Category 3 climbs, including a summit finish, which would have an impact on the stage final. A five-man breakaway formed early in the stage led by Peter Velits (BMC), Kristijan Durasek (Lampre-Merida), Stephen Cummings (MTN-Qhubeka), Cyril Gautier (Europcar), and Niki Terpstra (Etixx-Quick-Step). Giant-Alpecin and Team Sky led the peloton after the 80 km (50 mile) mark. Towards the end of the stage, Movistar came to the front of the peloton to support Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde.Then Cannondale-Garmin pushed to the front followed by Orica-GreenEdge and Chaves.
Stage 7 is a 191 km (119 mile) mountain stage running from Jodar to Capilleira. There are two categorized climbs on Stage 7, Puerto de Blancares,  a Category 3 9 km (5.6 mile) climb at the 87 km (54 mile) mark of the stage and Alto de Capileira. La Alpujarra, a Category 1 climb with an average grade of 5% (14% maximum) at a length of 18.7 km (11.6 mile( mark of the stage.
