Vuelta a Espana Stage 5 Results

Dumoulin takes the Red Jersey in the Vuelta in Stage 5

Caleb Ewan of Orica GreenEDGE beat out Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo) and John Degenkolb (Team Giant-Alpecin) in the final sprint to win Stage 5 of the Vuelta a Espana in Alcalá de Guadaíra. Tom Dumoulin (Team Giant-Alpecin) took the Vuelta lead from Esteban Chaves (Orica-GreenEDGE) after the peloton had a late split with Chaves in the trailing group. Dumoulin has the lead by one second over Chaves with the mountain stages beginning in Stage 6.
The 167.3 km (104 mile) Stage 5 from Rota to Alcalá de Guadaíra had only 650 meters of elevation. This was a stage for sprinters. This will be the last sprinter’s stage until Stage 12. By then, sprinters like Peter Sagan may have left the Vuelta to prepare for the World Championship in Richmond, Virginia September 19 – 27.
This was a stage with high temperatures throughout. There was a three-man breakaway at the 70 km (43.5 mile) mark with a five minute lead over the peloton. The breakaway was reeled in with 9 km (5.6 miles) to go with Tinkoff-Saxo leading the peloton, again supporting Peter Sagan. John Degenkolb (Team Giant-Alpecin) was following his lead out man to the finish line. Caleb Ewan sprinted past Sagan, who was fading on the uphill finish, and Degenkolb to win.
Stage 6 runs from Cordoba to Sierra de Cazorla for 200 km (124 miles) with a Category 3, and Category 2 climbs after the 140 km mark. The Category 2 climb at Alto de Cazorla leads to a summit finish.
