Lindeman wins Stage 7

Bert Jan Lindeman (Team LottoNL-Jumbo ) won Stage 7 today in La Alpujarra today. A five-man breakaway had a ten minute lead over the peloton at the 19 km mark. At 5 km to go, the breakaway had dwindled to three going up the steep climb to the finish. Lindeman pulled away from the other two breakaway cyclists, Ilia Koshevoy (Lampre-Merida) and Jérôme Cousin (Team Europcar). Cousin crashed within 2 km, and Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team) came up from the peloton to come in third behind Lindeman and Koshevoy. Esteban Chavez is still the leader of the Vuelta overall, wearing the Red Jersey. The top 5 contenders remain unchanged after the first week of the Vuelta finished today. Chris Froome slipped to twelfth, 1 minute and 22 seconds behind Chavez. Fabio Aru’s (Astana Pro Team) third place finish moved in up to the top ten GC contenders.

The sunny and hot Stage 7 was a 191.1 km (118.7 mile) route from Jódar to La Alpujarra with a Category 3 climb at the 70 km (43.5 mile) mark of the stage and a Category 1 (20 km, 12 mile) climb at the finish.

Stage 8 is a mostly descending route from Puebla de Don Fabrique to Murcia for 182.5 km (113 miles). It has two Category 3 climbs, crossing the Cresta del Gallo twice, in the last third of the race with a flat finish. Alejandro Valverde will have a special incentive to win since he is from this area of Spain.
