Vincenzo Nibali Ejected from Vuelta

Vincenzo Nibali of the Astana Pro Team was eliminated from the Vuelta in Stage 2 for hanging on to the team support car for 6 km (3.7 miles) with 16 km (9.9miles) to go in the Stage 2. Nibali was involved in a crash that stopped many of the cyclists and splitting the peloton into two. Hanging onto the team car helped Nibali to accelerate up to the lead group. After reviewing the video of the incident, race officials disqualified Nibali from the race. Nibali won the Vuelta in 2010

The 159 km (98.8 mile) stage went from Alhaurín de la Torre to Caminito del Rey. Esteban Chaves (Orica GreenEdge) edged out Tom Dumoulin (Team Giant-Alpecin) at the summit finish. Nairo Quintana was with Chaves, Tom Dumoulin (Team Giant-Alpecin) and Nicolas Roche (Team Sky) but faded within the last three km (1.8 miles) of the finish.

For Stage 3, all of the remaining GC contenders are within 1 minute of Chaves, including Tejay Van Garderen of the BMC Racing Team with a 55-second deficit.

Nabili going back to Italy should open the door for Fabio Aru and Mikel Landa, young stars of the Astana team to compete for the Red Jersey for the team.

Stage 3 will be a 158.4-kilometer (98.4-mile) route from Mijas to Malaga and should benefit sprinters.
