BMC wins the Team Time Trial by 1 Second
BMC Racing Team won the Team Time Trial by one second over Team Sky. This close victory keeps Chris Froome, Team Sky, as the Tour leader going into the rest day tomorrow. Alberto Contador, Tinkoff-Saxo, moved up to fifth, 1 minute and 3 seconds behind, Chris Froome. Vincenzo Nibali, Astana Pro Team, fell to just over 2 minutes behind Chris Froome. On Tuesday, the Tour begins the tough Pyrenees stages.
Stage 9 was the Team Time Trial, a challenging 28 km course from Vanes to Plumelec in Brittany. The clock stops when the first five cyclists of each team cross the finish line. Since there are two weeks to go, and the mountains stages are on the horizon, the Tour cannot be won today, but it can be lost today.
As the reigning World Time Trial Champions, BMC Racing Team had hopes of winning the stage by more than 13 seconds ahead of Team Sky and Chris Froome which would have put Tejay Van Garderen into the Tour lead and in the Yellow Jersey.
Tinkoff-Saxo could have put Peter Sagan into Yellow. Astana finished their time trial in first place, with Vincenzo Nibali. Movistar, BMC Racing Team and Team Sky edged past them in the last portion of the time trial. At the end of the stage, Astana fell 35 seconds behind BMC.
Team Sky passed through the time checkpoints with nearly the same time as BMC, forcing BMC to gain 13 seconds in the last third of the stage to put Van Garderen in Yellow. Tinkoff-Saxo finished seconds behind Movistar, which helped Quintana to gain some time on Alberto Contador and Peter Sagan, both of whom were ahead of Quintana.
