Frenchman wins Stage 8 in Brittany

Alexis Vuillermoz, AG2R-La Mondial, won Stage 8 in the heart of French cycling, Brittany, by passing Chris Froome, Team Sky, and Dan Martin, Cannondale-Garmin, within the last kilometer of the stage. Vuillermoz is the first Frenchman to win a stage in this year’s Tour and the first since, Blel Kadri, AG2R-La Mondiale, won in last year’s Stage 8.
Stage 8 in Brittany from Rennes to Mur-de-Bretagne, an 118.5 km (73.6 miles) with a tough climb at the finish up the Mur-de-Bretagne. The climb is 2 km long with an average grade of 6.9% with a 15% section. With a light wind and no rain, this was a relatively quiet stage compared to the dramatic stages during the first week of the Tour. Cannondale Garmin set the pace for the peloton for a good deal of the stage with Ryder Hesjedal and Andrew Talansky leading the effort.
Stage 9, tomorrow, will be a Team Time Trial, where certain teams like BMC Racing Team and Team Sky have had success earlier this season. BMC Racing Team are the current world champions for Team Time Trial. Brittany is the home of Bernard Hinault, five-time winner of the Tour.
Chris Froome retains the Yellow Jersey, which he wore in today’s stage. Peter Sagan, Tinkoff -Saxo, pulled ahead of Andre Greipel, Lotto-Soudal, in the Green Jersey competition with a fourth-place finish in today’s stage

Tour News

Luca Paolini, Team Katusha, failed a random drug test on July 7. The 38-year-old Italian cyclist was withdrawn from the Tour by his team. The team will wait for the analysis of Sample B before taking any further action against Paolini.
