Cavendish Wins Stage 7
Mark Cavendish, Etixx-Quick Step, won his first stage of this year's Tour. Cavendish outsprinted both Andre Greipel, Lotto-Soudal, and Peter Sagan, Tinkoff-Saxo, in the last 100 m of the stage. This victory was his 26th Tour stage victory and his first stage victory since 2013. The Etixx-Quick Step victory today is the third of the Tour and second consecutive victory. This was the last pure sprint stage of the tour for a while. After this stage, the next sprint stage should be Stage 15 Mende to Valence and after that the next pure sprint stage will be in Paris.
This was a sunny day for Stage 7 from Livarot to Fougeres, 190.5 km (118.4 miles) as the peloton traveled from Normandy to Brittany. Lotto-Soudal, with Andre Greipel, led the peloton for most of the stage with the top GC contender teams close behind including Movistar and Tinkoff-Saxo. The peloton did not catch up to the breakaway until there was about 11 km left in the stage. The peloton kept the breakaway out front for kilometers to prevent more attacks from the peloton. If the peloton had caught the breakaway earlier there would have been more attacks in the narrow, twisting streets near the end of the stage.
The Tour de France is one-third complete. Chris Froome, Team Sky, did not put on the Yellow Jersey for today's stage. He followed a long tradition where if the tour leader withdraws, the yellow jersey is not worn on the following day. Chris Froome was awarded the Yellow Jersey today. Daniel Teklehaimanot, MTN-Qhubeka, finished the only categorized climb in the first seven miles of Stage 7 to retain the polka dot jersey of the king of the mountains. Andre Greipel retains the Green Jersey.
