Greg van Avermaet edges Peter Sagan at the line
The Belgian Greg van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team) beat Peter Sagan, Tinkoff-Saxo, in the final sprint to win Stage 13. The peloton, with the sprinters leading the charge, caught the breakaway group with less than 1 km to the finish line. With the second place finish on the stage, Sagan retains the Points Competition lead over André Greipel, Lotto-Soudal. There was no change in the GC Standings. The top GC contenders kept an eye on each other throughout the stage and crossed the finish line together.
The 198.5 km (123 mile) Stage 13, from Muret to Rodez, was a very warm (93 degrees F, 34 C) transition stage that was fairly flat in the first half of the stage with three categorized climbs in the second half of the stage (2 Category 4 climbs and one Category 3 climb). This was a stage set up for Peter Sagan to increase his one point lead in the Points competition. A transition stage is typically a mixed flat and hilly route typically between the Pyrenees and Alps.
A 6 cyclist breakaway was nearly 4 minutes in front at 110 km mark. Team Giant-Alpecin led the peloton to help John Degenkolb with the intermediate sprint. Team Sky was close behind sheltering Chris Froome. The breakaway cyclists took the first six places at the intermediate sprint. Greipel came in seventh, followed by Degenkolb and Mark Cavendish, Etixx-Quick Step. Sagan came across the line next, so Greipel took the lead in the Points competition on the road with the final sprint to come.
Tinkoff-Saxo moved to the front of the peloton to share the work with Team Giant-Alpecin at 70 km to go. Tinkoff-Saxo wanted to support Sagan at the end of the stage. At 60 km, the peloton split due to crosswinds, Andre Greipel, Lotto-Soudal, was in the second group, along with Vincenzo Nibali, Astana Pro Team, who was in the first group but had a tire puncture.
The peloton came back together with 26 km and the gap to the breakaway began to shrink. The teams with sprinters began to gather at the front. With less than 1 km to go the peloton caught the breakaway group and the sprinters lined up for the final sprint.
