Rafal Majka Wins Stage 11
Rafal Majka, Tinkoff-Saxo, pulled away from the breakaway group near the top of the climb up the Col du Tourmalet and stayed away to win Stage 11. This was Majka’s first stage win in this year’s Tour and the first of the season. This was also Tinkoff-Saxo’s first Tour win this year. The Polish cyclist won the King of the Mountains competition in the Tour in 2014.
All of the top contenders were in the lead group of the peloton keeping an eye on each other. Therefore, there was not much of a change in the Yellow Jersey standings today, except for Vincenzo Nibali, Astana Pro Team, the winner of last year's Tour, who fell behind the lead group near the top of the last climb to the finish. He finished one minute behind Chris Froome on today’s stage. The rest of the top contenders finished in the same group with Froome.
Peter Sagan, Tinkoff-Saxo, regained the lead in the Points competition, taking back the Green Jersey from Andre Greipel, Lotto-Soudal, at the intermediate sprint early in the stage. Sagan finished second in that sprint.
Lance Armstrong commented on strong victory by Chris Froome in Stage 10. In a tweet, Armstrong wondered whether Froome, Richie Porte and Team Sky were too strong to be clean. This tweet could be an attempt to gain attention for his upcoming rides for charity over the next two days over Stage 12 and Stage 13 routes. His tweet did bring a swift negative reaction from other Twitter users. Team Sky let it be known that they saw how other cyclists were struggling in the thin air and Froome ordered an attack in Stage 10 to take advantage.
