Tour de France Stage 10 Updates

Fireworks on Bastille Day

Chris Froome, Team Sky, won his fifth overall Tour stage in dramatic fashion today. Froome attacked with 6 km left on the a 14.5 km (9 mile) hors catégorie climb, La Pierre-Saint-Martin. At the start of the climb, all of the contenders were together in the lead group of the peloton, but each of Froome’s rivals fell away as he charged to the finish line. Froome gained time on each his rivals today, significantly changing the Yellow Jersey competition. The question for the next two stages is whether Froome expended too much today and will his competitors be able to take advantage.
Stage 10 was the first stage in the Pyrenees on Bastille Day in France. Tinkoff-Saxo and Movistar led the peloton as the last climb began with Team Sky and BMC Racing Team close behind. Vincenzo Nibali, Astana Pro Team,  cracked at 10 km to go. Froome, Nairo Quintana, Movistar Team, Tejay Van Garderen, BMC Racing Team, and Alberto Contador, Tinkoff-Saxo,  kept an eye on each other at the front of the peloton. Team Sky took over the lead of the peloton at 9 km to go. Alejandro Valverde broke away from the peloton at 8km putting pressure on Team Sky. This move by Movistar was expected today. With Valverde putting pressure on Team Sky and Nairo Quintana attacking near the end of the climb.
The lead group of the peloton became smaller and smaller as the climb continued. Contador slipped off the back of the front group at 6.5 km. Chris Froome attacked 6 km passing Valverde and Quintana struggled to follow, and Van Garderen was dropped. Chris Froome pulled away in the final kilometers to put considerable time on his rivals.
Andre Greipel pulled ahead of Mark Cavendish and Peter Sagan at the intermediate sprint to regain the lead in the Green Jersey competition. Andre Greipel is having an outstanding Tour so far. However with the coming mountain stages, Greipel may have difficulty staying up with Sagan, who has done well enough in these types of stages over the years to win the Green Jersey the past three years.
