Peter Sagan wins his 16th Tour of California Stage

Peter Sagan of Bora-Hansgrohe won a sprinter friendly Stage 3 of the Amgen Tour of California in Morro Bay. This stage victory was Sagan’s record 16th stage win in the Tour. The world champion has the most career stage victories. Sagan outsprinted Alexander Kristoff, Rick Zabel of Katusha-Alpecin and Taylor Phinney (Cannondale-Drapac) within the final 200 meters on the uphill last kilometer. After the last right-hand turn toward the finish, Sagan began to sprint, came around Phinney and then overtook Kristoff and Zabel winning by 2 meters. Wolfe won his second Most Courageous Rider Jersey yesterday. He won his first on Stage 1.
Stage 3 was a 192.5 km (119.6 miles) route from Pismo Beach to Morro Bay and was the longest of this year’s Tour. It was a mostly flat stage with only on categorized climb on the route, Tepusquet Road, a Category 3 climb 84 km (52 miles) into the stage. Five riders, Danny Pate (Rally Cycling), Federico Zurlo (UAE Team Emirates), David Lozano (Novo Nordisk) and Sean Bennett and Ben Wolfe of Jelly Belly–Maxxis led an early breakaway that formed a gap of 5 minutes at the 20 km (12.4 mile) mark. The peloton slowly wore away the gap, and the breakaway group was reduced to one rider, Ben Wolfe of Jelly Belly-Maxxis. Wolfe was caught with 8 km (5 miles) to go. Katusha, Rally Cycling, Cofidis, Team Sky and Trek-Segafredo battled for position in the final 8 km (5 miles) from the finish.
