Tom Dumoulin Wins Stage 13

Tom Dumoulin First in Time Trial, Froome Tightens Grip on Yellow Jersey

The Stage 13 Time Trial was completed under increased security resulting from the Bastille Day attack in Nice. Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) won his second Stage victory in this year’s Tour de France with a little over a minute advantage over Chris Froome (Team Sky) over the 37 km route. Dumoulin completed the course in 50 minutes, 15 seconds. Second place Froome built his lead in the General Classification Standings to 1:47 over Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) and 2:45 over Adam Yates (Orica-BikeExchange). With a sprinter’s stage tomorrow, a rest day and then the Alps stages, it looks like winning, or losing, the Tour is up to Froome and Team Sky.
Stage 13 was a somber stage after the attack in Nice last night, which killed 84 people and wounding 202 at a Bastille Day celebration. There was a moment of silence at the start of the stage. At the end of the stage, all of the current Tour leaders came on stage together without music and held another moment of silence. The Tour organizers increased security at the stage. The stage ran from Bourg-Saint-Andéol to La Caverne du Pont-d'Arc, along the Gorges de l'Ardèche on the banks of Rhône. The course included a 7 km climb at the beginning of the stage. This would make it a little more difficult for the pure time trial specialists in the Tour. It was a route that favored Froome.
Between the route and the wind, many riders with ambitions to reduce Froome’s lead were disappointed. Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) lost 50 seconds to Froome. Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) had a tough day, losing 2 minutes in the GC Standings. Richie Porte (BMC Racing) came in three minutes behind Dumoulin, two minutes behind Froome. Two days ago, two minutes separated the top nine riders. After today’s stage, there is nearly a two-minute gap between Froome and second place Mollema.
