Skujins of Cannondale Survives to Win Stage 6

Tom Skujins of Cannondale Pro Cycling Team was one of three riders sprinting for the finish line out of a breakaway group of 18 riders, who went clear early in the 212-kilometer stage that ran from Lodi up to South Lake Tahoe. The Tour leader, Julian Alaphilippe of Etixx – Quick Step, maintained his 22 second lead in the race by finishing with the main group just 43 seconds behind the remains of the breakaway group. This stage would have been a good chance for one of the other teams to push their leader ahead of Alaphilippe. Now with just two stages left, including an individual time trail, it looks like Alaphilippe will keep the leader’s jersey.
The stage started flat, but the latter portion of the stage was a steady climb in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The large breakaway group formed early in the stage and built a gap of up to five minutes on the peloton. Like any large breakaway group, they attacked each other over the route. Skujins pushed ahead of the group to try and grab the KOM points at Kirkwood. He was followed by Adam De Vos (Rally), who took the points in defense of his teammate, Evan Huffman, who is leading the KOM competition. At the 31 kilometer mark, Skujins attacked again, and this time, he was followed by De Vos and Xabier Zandio of Team Sky. The three riders stayed ahead of the remaining breakaway riders and the peloton to sprint to the finish. Skujins won the sprint to the line for Cannondale’s second Tour victory this year. It is Skujins second victory ever in the Tour. He won last year, on Stage 3, which also started in Lodi and he also won in a breakaway.
