Kristoff wins first Amgen Tour Victory

Alexander Kristoff, of Team Katusha, narrowly defeated Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) to win Stage 7 of the Amgen Tour of California in downtown Santa Rosa. Tour leader Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx - Quick-Step) finished the stage well enough to keep his lead in the general classification for the final stage tomorrow in Sacremento.

Stage 7 was a 175.5-kilometer stage with a circuit race in Santa Rosa. Evan Huffman (Rally Cycling) settled his King of the Mountains victory on the climbs during the stage. A breakaway group formed with Rohan Dennis (BMC), which Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx) joined that breakaway group. Peter Sagan (Tinkoff), Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) and four other riders pulled away and formed another breakaway group. With 60 kilometers to go in the stage, Sagan pulled away on his own and built a gap of up to two minutes. The peloton, led by Team Katusha, caught up to Sagan inside the 20-kilometer mark. Sagan stayed near the front of the peloton.
Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) and Peter Sagan sprinted to the finish. Kristoff finished inches ahead of Sagan to gain his first Amgen Tour victory in two starts in the Tour.
