Vuelta a Espana Stage 17 Results

Dumoulin Seizes the Lead of the Vuelta in the Time Trial

As expected, Tom Dumoulin of Team Giant-Alpecin won the individual time trial in Stage 17 of the Vuelta. Dumoulin vaulted from fourth place and 1 minute 51 seconds down to Joaquim Rodriguez (Team Katusha), the leader of the Vuelta after Stage 15. Dumoulin is now 3 seconds ahead of Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team) and one minute 15 seconds ahead of Joaquim Rodriguez (Team Katusha). Dumoulin was expected to do well in the time trial. Now there are three competitive stages left before the ceremonial stage in Madrid on Sunday.
The only individual time trial of the Vuelta of 39 km (24 miles) in Burgos. Dumoulin placed third in the 2014 UCI Road World Championship in the Men’s Time Trial. Dumoulin was expected to regain the Red Jersey in today’s stage. The question now is whether Dumoulin will be able to maintain his lead in the GC standings over the next three stages against Aru and Rodriguez. The next two stages have 3 categorized climbs combined. Team Giant-Alpecin will have to support Dumoulin in these stages. However, on the penultimate stage, Stage 20, there are four Category 1 climbs on the route.
The 204 km (126.8 mile) Stage 18 route from Roa de Duero to Riaza has a Category 3 climb, Alto del Campanario and a Category 1 climb, Puerto de la Quesera, 13 km (8 miles) from the stage finish. There is little flat terrain on the stage which will favor a breakaway group.
