Dumoulin Seizes the Lead of the Vuelta in the Time Trial
As expected, Tom Dumoulin of Team Giant-Alpecin won the individual time trial in Stage 17 of the Vuelta. Dumoulin vaulted from fourth place and 1 minute 51 seconds down to Joaquim Rodriguez (Team Katusha), the leader of the Vuelta after Stage 15. Dumoulin is now 3 seconds ahead of Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team) and one minute 15 seconds ahead of Joaquim Rodriguez (Team Katusha). Dumoulin was expected to do well in the time trial. Now there are three competitive stages left before the ceremonial stage in Madrid on Sunday.
The 204 km (126.8 mile) Stage 18 route from Roa de Duero to Riaza has a Category 3 climb, Alto del Campanario and a Category 1 climb, Puerto de la Quesera, 13 km (8 miles) from the stage finish. There is little flat terrain on the stage which will favor a breakaway group.
