Aru Hangs on to Red Jersey by One Second over Rodriguez

Joachim Rodriguez (Team Katusha) pulled away from Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team) with 400m to go in the summit finish in Stage 15. Rodriguez closed to within 1 second of Aru in the General Classification standings. Rafal Majka (Tinkoff-Saxo) is in third, 1 minute, 24 seconds behind. Tom Dumoulin (Team Giant-Alpecin) fell to 1 minute 25 seconds back. If Dumoulin stays close tomorrow, then he may be able to make up the time in the individual time trial on Tuesday. With one week to go in the Vuelta, the top 5 GC contenders, including Esteban Chaves (Orica GreenEdge) are within 1 minute 30 seconds of each other.
A nine-rider breakaway developed 50 km (31 miles) into the stage. The breakaway included:  Pierre Rolland (Europcar), Haimar Zubeldia (Trek Factory), Brayan Ramirez (Colombia), Nikolas Maes (Etixx - Quick Step), Ricardo Vilela (Caja Rural - Seguros RGA), Dominique Rollin (Cofidis), Natnael Berhane (MTN - Qhubeka),  Maarten Tjallingii (Lotto NL - Jumbo), and Blel Kadri (AG2R - La Mondiale). Movistar Team and Astana Pro Team led the peloton to keep Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) and Aru out in front of the peloton and trouble free. At the end of the stage, Zubeldia was the lone breakaway rider. The leaders’ group caught up with Zubeldia with 2 km (1.2 miles) remaining in the stage on the final Category 1 climb.
Stage 15 was a 175 km mountainous stage running from Comillas to Jitu de Escarandi, with 1 Category 3, 1 Category 2 and a final Category 1, the Alto de Sotres, which had a gradient of 8% over 13 km (8 miles).
Stage 16 looks like a key lying on its side with 7 Categorized climbs from Luarca to Ermita del Alba over 184 km (114 miles). The route has 3 Category 3 climbs, 2 Category 2 climbs, 1 Category 1 climb and one climb Especial, Alto Ermita de Alba, used for the first time in the Vuelta. This next stage will be a tough test one day before the rest day on Tuesday.
