2015 UCI World Championship - Men's Junior & Women's Elite Time Trial

German Leo Appelt Wins Men’s Junior Time Trial

Leo Appelt, a 17-year-old from Germany, won the Men’s Junior Time Trial over American Adrien Costa, who was favored to win. Appelt covered the 19.9 km (18.6-mile) course in 37:45.01, beating Costa by 17 seconds on a breezy and cool day in  Richmond. The unheralded but talented Appelt owns eight German junior national championships in three disciplines: road, track and cyclocross. In 2013, Appelt finished 29 first place finishes in all three disciplines.
Costa started last in the competition but came in second for the second consecutive year. The Americans have won 4 of the six available medals in the first two days of the UCI World Championships.

Linda Villumsen Wins the Elite Women’s Time Trial by 3 Seconds

Linda Villumsen of New Zealand won the Elite Women’s Time Trial by only 3 seconds over Anna Van Der Breggen of the Netherlands. In 40:30, Villumsen covered the 29.2 km (18 mile) course in Richmond 3 seconds behind Villumsen. Villumsen, 30, has finished on the World Championship podium five times over the years, with 2-second place finishes and three third-place finishes and has finished in the top 10 seven times.Two-time world champion Kristin Armstrong (USA) had an early lead n the competition but was overtaken by the last group of riders in the day.
