Two Contenders Crash out of the Vuelta in Stage 8

Dan Martin of Cannondale-Garmin Pro Cycling Team and Tejay Van Garderen of BMC Racing Team were injured in a crash at the 50 km (31 mile) mark of Stage 8 of the Vuelta a España. Martin was third in the Vuelta going into today’s stage and Van Garderen was sixteenth in the standings. Both of them withdrew from the race along with Nacer Bouhanni, the Cofidis sprinter and Kris Boeckmans of Lotto-Soudal, who was taken to hospital. Frank Schleck was also injured in that crash, but continued on. Boeckmans was listed as stable at the hospital and Van Garderen may have a broken collarbone. Van Garderen had abandoned the Tour de France due to illness and he was competing in the Vuelta to prepare for the UCI Road World Championship in mid September.
Jasper Stuyven (Trek Factory Racing) won Stage 8 in a bunch sprint in Murcia. The 182.5 km (113 mile ) stage from Puebla de don Fadrique to Murcia. This was Stuyven’s first WorldTour victory in his career.Stuyven and Vuelta leader Esteban Chaves (Orica GreenEDGE) were involved in the crash at 50 km (31 miles) but were able to recover and sprint for the finish line. The stage was a mostly descending route toward Murcia, with two Category 3 climbs, the Cresta del Gallo was ascended twice within a circuit at the end of the stage.
Alex Howes (Cannondale-Garmin), Iljo Keisse (Etixx-Quick Step), Tom Van Asbroeck (LottoNL-Jumbo), Jimmy Engoulvent (Europcar), Mattia Cattaneo (Lampre-Merida) and Ángel Madrazo (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) forged a breakaway 35 km (22 miles) from the start of the stage. The breakaway was pulled in with 15 km (9.3 miles) to go. Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo) was contending for the stage victory, but a race motorcycle hit Sagan causing him to crash within 10 km of the end of the stage. Sagan finished five minutes behind and in 64th for the stage.
Stage 9 is a 168.3 km (104.5 mile) stage from Torrevieja to Cumbre del Sol. The stage is mostly flat for the majority of the route. At the 140 km (74.5 mile) mark there is a Category 2 climb, Alto de Puig Llorenca, with a another climb up Alto de Puig Llorenca at the end of the stage, this time as a Category 1 climb.
